Anatolian Archaeology Institute project kicks off in Turkey's Gaziantep
Works to found Turkey's first national institute for archaeology, the Anatolian Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Institute, have kicked off in the southeastern province of Gaziantep.
The project, supported by the European Union (EU) and led by the metropolitan municipality in Gaziantep, has gathered EU delegates, Gaziantep Mayor Fatma Şahin from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), international and local archaeologists, chairs of several universities' archaeology developments, along with directors of excavations.
Participants discussed options for the construction of the institute during the event entitled "Anatolian Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Institute Project Publicity Meeting".
"In this geography, which is as ancient as the history of humanity, our cultural heritage is our greatest treasure. The cultural heritage is the greatest light, power and guidance to enlighten the dark points in the history of humanity" said Fatma Şahin during the event.
However, Turkey has not achieved to sufficiently make a gravity force to introduce the Anatolian soils to the world, she added.
The archaeology institute supported by a UNESCO network called "Creative Cities" in cooperation with ministries in Turkey was a "delayed" response to a "scientific" need, Gaziantep Mayor also stated. The construction of the institute which will gather significant data will be followed by the settlement of ancient sites in the region, Şahin announced.
